KC-BBQ:Fans might have expected a pitcher's duel when Yu Darvish squared off against Cole Hamels, but it's safe to say no one, especially the pitchers themselves had any idea what was in store. The zeroes kept piling up, and so did the Ks. At the end of 9 neither side had pushed a run across and these guys were just warming up. 13-14-15 no score. The two pitchers went back and forth for the lead in strikeouts, but Darvish started to pull away. Somewhere around the 18th inning he racked up his 27th K, a full game worth of Ks. Carlos Gonzalez, who entered the game as a pinch runner, finished the game with 5 strikeouts. 19-20-21 still no score. Finally in the 22nd Alcides Escobar led off with a double and stole third base. That seemed to rattle Darvish, or else the exhaustion finally kicked in. A single by Puig, a walk and a Homer by Morneau and Kansas City had a 4 run lead. Darvish left to a standing ovation from the fans who could still stand up at that point. He amassed the amazing total of 38 strikeouts! Greg Holland came in and struck out the side for good measure. Hamels came out to finish what he started. He added two more Ks, and finished with a 23 inning complete game, with 27 Ks. |
